There is a captivating history to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the border from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall betting is prohibited. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a relatively tiny area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect spot, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest betting centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of restrictions constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; although, financing sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and despite the fact visas are for all intents and purposes required to cross, there are methods around this, as is true of many borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored boat gambling den, highlights one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty tables. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred one armed bandits and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around vacation and hotel building that contains a number of comforts on top of the gambling den, which houses ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machine games and 88 table games.
