There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the border from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall betting is prohibited. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a relatively small area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime spot, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The amazing capital accrued from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of restrictions constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; although, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and though visas are allegedly necessary to pass, there are ways around this, as is true of many borders.
The 1st Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored barge gambling den, highlights 150 slots and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of 21, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are 150 slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machines and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel complex that features a number of amenities in addition to the casino, which provides 10,000 square feet of 130 slot machine games and 88 tables.
