There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the border from nearby Thailand, where gambling hall gambling is prohibited. Eight casinos are based in a relatively small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime spot, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of restrictions constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; still, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 17:00, and even though visas are allegedly necessary to cross, there are methods around this, as is true of most border crossings.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored bateau gambling hall, contains 150 slot machines and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slots and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machines and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 table games, including 87 punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the familiar gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive resort and hotel building that contains a number of luxuries accompanying the casino, which houses ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and 88 tables.
