There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the dividing line from next door Thailand, where gambling hall wagering is prohibited. Eight gambling dens are based in a relatively small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent spot, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a few controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; although, investment sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are apparently needed to cross, there are methods around this, as is correct of many border crossings.
The initial Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored ship gambling hall, highlights 150 one armed bandits and sixty table games. The Naga gambling hall is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 table games, including eighty seven punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel complex that features numerous comforts aside from the gambling hall, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight table games.
